Strawberry Shortcake and “Soup”

One of the kiddos favorite things to do on the playground is pretend to make soup. They use the shovel and pails, the big bowls, rocks, leaves, weeds, flowers, and pretend to make soup. I found this idea on Pinterest a few months ago http://www.mericherry.com/2014/05/04/making-nature-soup-nature-water-play-toddlers/, and thought this was the perfect week to make it happen. It was such a great activity! I was hearing things like “Be careful this is hot”, “Don’t cut yourself”, “Don’t touch the stove it is hot”, “This is going to be so yummy”, pretending to take a bite or sharing bites with friends “This is delicious!”, “Have a taste, but don’t burn yourself.” They were sharing items and ideas. They would venture off to bring back some flowers, weeds, grass, and even a few rocks. This is something we will continue to do on the playground frequently, with different items.
Our book today was Cook-A-Doodle-Doo by Janet Stevens/Susan Stevens Crummel. This was Miss Emilea’s favorite childhood book, so she was super excited to share it with the children. In the book they make strawberry shortcake, so that was our baking project of the day. It was really good, and the recipe is included in our cookbook. They also made their own chef hats today. Have a wonderful weekend, and maybe go outside and make some “soup”! See you Monday for Art Week!
